This paper provides a historical overview of dialect classifications of Swedish. Since the late 19th century, four such classifications have been published, all of them based on traditional isoglottic dialectology. Lundell (1880) distinguished four main dialect groups, refraining from defining any subdivisions. Noreen (1903) distinguished four main dialect groups, basically the same ones as Lundell’s, but he also identified many subdivisions on multiple levels. Wessén (1935) distinguished six main dialect groups, while making it clear that the assumed boundaries between them should be regarded as transitional zones. His classification has had, and still has, a profound influence on Swedish dialectology. Elert (1994) distinguished seven regional varieties of spoken standard Swedish.
