Situationen för minoritetsspråket meänkieli i Sverige2008Report (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

In 2000, Sweden ratified the Framework Convention for the Protection of National Minorities and the European Charter for Regional or Minority Languages. By ratifiying the Framework Convention and the Minority Languages Charter, and by implementing legislation giving the right to use Sámi, Finnish and Meänkieli in contact with administrative authorities and courts (1999:1175 and 1999:1176), Sweden has accepted the charge of protecting and promoting the five national minorities and their languages, Meänkieli, Finnish, Sámi, Romani and Yiddish. This report argues that the acknowledgment by the Swedish government of Meänkieli as a national minority language represents a significant step forward for the language. The situation of Meänkieli has improved both in its status and in the extent to which individuals invoke the right to use it. Attitudes towards the language and the values of the population have also undergone a positive change.

The report concludes that the implementation of the legislation and the official recognition of Meänkieli are significant first steps that provide a basis upon which the government can build. Although isolated measures have been taken, major actions - crucial for the preservation and development of Meänkieli as a living language - have not yet been initiated. The report lays the groundwork for a concerted set of measures that would ensure the conditions for the preservation of Meänkieli. The recommendations of the Council of Europe have indicated on several occasions that measures should be taken in Sweden to ensure the future of Meänkieli. With support of the European Charter for Regional and Minority Languages, the Swedish government has the possibility to contribute to the positive development of Meänkieli.

The report presents fourteen central fields where concrete measures are necessary both for Meänkieli to be able to develop and to support the continued use of the language in Sweden. The educational system, from pre-school to university, is one of the main areas in which much is still to be done. The report also underscores other areas such as mass media, place names and language cultivation.

    Abstract [en]

The aim of this article is to explore two case studies of Old Norse sexual charms and curses. The first case is a curse described in Skírnismál which is used by Skírnir to break Gerðr’s will, and the second is a description by Saxo Grammaticus in his Gesta Danorum of how Óðinn used sorcery to break Rind’s will and rape her. The main argument is that the terminology and worldview found therein are possible to trace in other sources, where sorcery is employed to break the will of young women and force them to have sexual intercourse with the one who uttered or carved the charm or curse. With evidence taken from runic inscriptions and accounts of love magic from saga literature, as well as younger folkloristic examples, it is argued that this is not only a mythic motif, but something that was practiced at a societal level. It is also argued that many of the charms and curses contain foul language that serves the purpose to reinforce the charms and make them more potent

    Abstract [en]

This book is a presentation of the dialects of the Swedish province of Bohuslän in western Sweden. It contains 22 taped samples of spoken dialect from the middle of this century of a length ranging from 1'30'' up to 4'45''.

The dialect examples are chosen from different parts of the province and are presented in readable form together with a written explanatory commentary, as well as in audible form on the CD that accompanies the book.

The book also contains 12 samples of written dialect from different written sources, which are also presented together with a written commentary. One part of the book consists of a more general popular description of the dialects of Bohuslän.

Attityd, interferens, genitivsyntax: Studier i nutida Överkalixmål1992Doctoral thesis, monograph (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

The dissertation deals with the Överkalix dialect in three respects. Överkalix is the northernmost community of the country where Swedish dialect is spoken. It is surrounded on the east and the north by Finnish, and on the west by Finnish and Saami.

The first section of the thesis is based on a questionnaire survey among all junior high school students (14-16 years old) in Överkalix and among their parents. It discusses the present-day position of the Överkalix dialect and the attitudes of the people of Överkalix toward the dialect. The results indicate that the people who consider themselves to be speakers of the local dialect have access to two language codes: local dialect and standard Swedish. Personal relationship is the deciding factor in language code choice. None of the parents considers himself/herself to be dialectally monolingual: 11% speak only standard Swedish, 75% keep the varieties apart and are thus bidialectal.

77% of the dialect-speaking students and 69% of those who do not speak dialect have a positive attitude toward the dialect, boys to a greater extent than girls among the dialect-speaking, and girls to a greater extent than boys among non-dialect speakers.

The second section examines interference from the surrounding languages, Finnish and Saami, in the Överkalix dialect in general and in the Överkalix dialect of multilingual informantsin particular. These informants speak standard Swedish, dialect, Finnish and/or Saami. The main data of this section originates from recorded interviews performed as informal conversations.

The author discusses some characteristic phonetic features in the dialect which seem to be the result of influence from Saami and/or Finnish. The material also shows a number of influences on the syntactic level.

The third section describes how the genitive is expressed in the dialect of Överkalix. The author gives several examples of how the -s genitive is paraphrased—most commonly with a prepostion.

Skrabbig och skrallig, karsk och katig: En semantisk studie av svenska dialektala adjektiv avseende hälsotillstånd1993Book (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this dissertation is to compile and study the words referring to state of health in the dialects of Sweden. The investigation is primarily semantic. The material has been collected from dialect archives and dictionaries.

In an attempt to find pattems in this vocabulary, all the meanings of a selection of the words are listed, i.e. even meanings which are not related to state of health. The etymologies and general geographic distribution of these words are also studied. The linguistic patterns are then, as far as possible, related to medical facts and the physical status of people in the peasant society of old.

In this way, for example the fact that many of the adjectives denoting 'poorly, sick, sickly' etc. are either derived from verbs with the meaning walk laboriously' and the like, or can be associated to such verbs, is related to the frequent occurrence of diseases of the joints.

Instances of sound symbolism in the vocabulary are pointed out. For example, words formed with pi-, pe-, spi-, spe- denoting 'little, slender, feeble, delicate'; kr-, skr- denoting scraping, or rustling noises and irregular movements and pj- denoting `whimpering, fretful, whining'.

Being in good or poor health can be seen as a point along a continuous line between a "healthy pole" and an "ill pole". The material shows few words at the "healthy pole" and meaning seriously ill, terminally ill while there are many words for 'disabled, weak, faint, poorly, sick' and so on.

One explanation for the large selection of adjectives expressing poor health may be the harsh conditions of life in the past, another that the body and health are emotionally charged areas.

The material shows what are believed to be signs of good and poor health. The adjectives indicate three factors which are essential in judging how a person feels: appearance, mental condition and mobility.

    Abstract [en]

Focus is on the names of companies in the Human Resources sector. Our study object are names of private job coaching firms in Sweden during the last ten years. A sample of these names is examined. Their usage of different languages, linguistic and onomastic features in the names, and the semantic meaning they convey are investigated. As these firms are recent additions to the Swedish commercial advertising landscape, some of the marketing strategies displayed on the companies' websites are discussed.
