    Abstract [en]

This dissertation deals with the work of documenting Swedish folk culture at the Institute of Dialect and Folklore Research in Uppsala. This work is analyzed as a scholarly field and from the perspective of power and resistance structures. The investigation has to do with the gathering of material from the perspective of ideas and of practice. On the ideological plane the purpose of the work of the Archive was to create true and objective historical documents concerning folk culture, factual and linguistic information taken directly from the people, representative parts that could be brought together in larger, functional units. Reality was to be investigated in all its range.

In practice, on the basis of their special competence and interests, researchers by making a subjective choice decided exactly which factual areas were to be investigated. No unified investigation was therefore achieved. Instead, traditional rural culture was chosen for investigation. Certain factual and/or geographical areas were given priority while others were rejected. By means of various strategies the researchers tried to influence the collectors in the field to gather the sort of information that the Archive wished to have. What was collected, however, was also influenced by the interests and knowledge of the collectors and was therefore the result of an agreement between the researchers and the collectors.

The whole enterprise was primarily conducted as a rescue operation, in which the oldest, the most threatened and the most popular cultural elements were to be collected. The old tradition was made to represent stability and continuity. What was modern, learned or literary was eliminated in favour of what was regarded as traditional and genuine. The enterprise entailed a sort of cultural criticism by the researchers of their own turbulent, contemporary world and of the working classes, which were made to represent modern and artificial culture. The material that was gathered, therefore, was not primarily a contribution to an understanding of the popular culture of the 19th century, but rather commentaries on and criticisms of culture at the moment of recording it. It therefore tells us more about the modern human being of the early 20th century that about rural life in the 19th century.

Sånt vi bara gör2019Collection (editor) (Other (popular science, discussion, etc.))
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

The fifth Nordic symposium of dialectologists was attended by about 85 participants. Forty-one lectures, including two plenary lectures (by Oskar Bandle, Zürich, and Lars Huldén, Helsinki) were presented, 36 of which are published in these proceedings. They clearly display the breadth of current Nordic dialectology. The volume thus includes both articles of traditional character and of more modern direction. The contributions treat dialects and the history of language, studies of word geography, semantics, lexicography, word formation, prosody, urban speech, language contact, dialect syntax, dialect as written language, etc. The differences between dialectological and sociolinguistic spoken language research are gradually diminishing. Connections with other disciplines, such as history of science, pedagogy, and ethnology are also evident.

From a geographic point of view, both general and more limited regional material is presented. All of the Nordic languages except Icelandic are represented, from the Faroe Islands in the west to Nyland in the east, from Fyn in the south to the northem Finnmark.

    Abstract [en]

The most recent dialect dictionary covering all Swedish dialects appeared in 1862–67, published by Johan Ernst Rietz. In those days, dialect dic-tionaries only consisted of words which did not appear in standard Swe-dish. Rietz, though, does include some standard words and in the fore-word to the dictionary he specifies his criteria for entering them. In this article I examine what standard words Rietz has actually included (based on the words beginning with h-) and how well they correspond to his cri-teria.

Utvecklingen av gammalt kort a framför ld och nd i svenska dialekter: A. Text1991Book (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

The aim of this thesis is to make a detailed survey, based on a representative sample of words, of how Old Swedish short a followed by the consonant combinations ld and nd has developed in the different Swedish dialects, including those of Finland and Estonia, and to contribute further to earlier discussion about the course of, and conditions governing, the development of this vowel. The words studied are (in their Modern Swedish forms): fåll n. hem', gall adj. 'barren, infertile (of a cow)', hålla v. 'hold', kall adj. `cold', ollon n. `acorn, beechmast', vålla v. 'cause', ålder n. 'age'; and n. 'duck', andas v. 'breathe', band n. 'band, ribbon', blanda v. 'mix', brand n. 'firebrand, fire', grand n. 'speck of dust' etc., hand n. 'hand', land n. 'country, land for cultivation, shore' etc., rand n. `stripe, edge' and sand n. 'sand'. For each word in the corpus, a map is used to illustrate the distribution of the different vowel qualities that occur. The study shows that the development of a in the positions in question is considerably more complex than has previously been realized. For one thing, the vowel has not developed in the same way in all the words with an a followed by ld or in all those with a followed by nd. Secondly, regular differences in vowel development are found between ald words on the one hand and and words on the other. An outline survey by the author of the corresponding developments in Danish and Norwegian dialects confirms this picture. An examination of the individual words, moreover, reveals conspicuous local deviations from the expected patterns. The author believes that this wealth of variation cannot be explained solely in terms of intralinguistic factors. As a complementary approach, an attempt should be made to apply a socio-linguistic perspective to the problem.
