Nordic Legends to do with Agriculture2022Other (Other (popular science, discussion, etc.))
    Abstract [en]

The Map of Nordic Legends (in Swedish: ’Sägenkartan’) is a collaboration between the Institute for Language and Folklore in Sweden (Isof), The Norwegian Folklore Archives (NFS), and the Swedish Literary Society in Finland (SLS). The map tells the legends of giants’ stone-throwing (the folkloristic explanations for glacial erratics), witches, the nixie, and encounters with gnomes, werewolves and the Devil himself. The map consists of 10.000 archive records, collected from archive collections and printed publications on legends. Among the legends, the visitor to the site will also find folklore connected with agriculture, for instance about the harvest (Sw. ’skörd’), the farm (Sw. ‘bondgård’), and farm animals (Sw: ’kreatur’, ’kritter’), including horses, cows, pigs, sheep, goats, cats and dogs (Sw: ‘häst’, ‘ko’, ‘gris’, ‘får’, ‘getter’, ‘katt’, ‘hund’).

Sånt vi bara gör2019Collection (editor) (Other (popular science, discussion, etc.))
    Abstract [sv]

Adapting a Topic Modelling Tool to the Task of Finding Recurring Themes in Folk Legends2020In: Proceedings of the Digital Humanities in the Nordic Countries 5th Conference (DHN 2020) / [ed] Reinsone et al., 2020, p. 388-392Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

A topic modelling tool, which was originally developed for performing text analysis on very short texts written in English, was adapted to the text genre of Swedish folk legends. The topic modelling tool was configured to use a word space model trained on a Swedish corpus, as well as a Swedish stop word list. The stop word list consisted of standard Swedish stop words, as well as 380 additional stop words that were tailored to the content of the corpus and therefore also included older spelling versions and grammatical forms of Swedish words. The adapted version of the tool was applied on a corpus consisting of around 10,000 Swedish folk legends, which resulted in the automatic extraction of 20 topics. Future versions of the tool will be extended with text summarisation func- tionality, in order to retain the text overview provided by the tool also when it is applied on longer folk legends.

Snippets of Folk Legends: Adapting a Text Mining Tool to a Collection of Folk Legends2021In: Post-Proceedings of the 5th Conference Digital Humanities in the Nordic Countries (DHN 2020), 2021Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

A topic modelling tool was adapted to requirements for a collection of Swedish folk legends. To offer an overview of a list of folk legend texts, which had been automatically extracted by the topic modelling tool, snippet text versions of the folk legends were displayed. The snippets were constructed from the full-text versions of the legends using the sentences most relevant to the topics extracted by the topic modelling algorithm. In addition, collection-adapted data was constructed for performing a pre-processing of the folk legend texts, before they were submitted to the topic modelling algorithm. This data consisted of a collection-adapted stop word list and word lists for improving the quality of clusters of semantically similar words.

Påskkäringar: Från trolldomstro till barnupptåg2013Book (Other academic)
    Abstract [sv]

I boken undersöks påskkäringstraditionen över tid.

    Abstract [en]

In 2011, about 350 years after the time of witch trials in Sweden, an invitation for taking parts in the witches’ Sabbath at Blåkulla spread on Facebook. Almost 120 000 participants, mostly women, registered to the event, and more than 13 000 wrote that they will maybe join the event. The Facebook event has then been reiterated every year. Based on this example of digital Easter celebration, this article discusses folklore in social media and how traditional legends are told and retold, shaped and reshaped and adapted to a new medium.    Bearing in mind the place of folklore in our contemporary media landscape and the emergence of new digital practices, we believe that folklorists have an essential role to play in studying these practices and their implications. For instance, in what ways can social media be an arena for (re)-telling, transformation and research of traditional legends?    Based on this case-study of the Facebook event Party at Blåkulla, we also discuss how folkloristics and folklore scholars can contribute to new insights in the understanding of digital culture through the study of core concepts in our field: tradition, context and communication.

    Abstract [en]

This article presents the project Nätpublicering av dialektinspelningar (Web publication of dialect recordings), which was launched in 2015. The article focuses on the ethics and methodology of digital publishing. Within the project, a digital platform called Dialektkartan (The Dialect Map) has been developed. Currently, this platform includes around 700 of the Institute for Language and Folklore’s collection of recorded interviews.
