In this article, I explore how feminist fanzines from the third wave of feminism in the 1990s contribute in constructing feminist subject positions. The aim of this study is to analyze how feminist criticism is being constructed in an empirical material that has positioned itself as critical. Drawing on the concept of metalinguistics (Verscheuren 2004), I show how feminist criticism is constructed through the use of mainly three metalinguistic features: intertextual links, self-referentials, and metalinguistic descriptions. The results show that a large number of metalinguistic features are being used in order to criticize other media, and to position writers as feminist subjects. For example, intertextual links in form of quotes serve as a way of creating dialogue with others and negotiating the meaning of linguistic expressions.
